Selecting the Right Bag

Size

While all motorcycle leg bags are small compared to other bags, there are still different size options in the mix.

Here’s what you can expect to fit in some of the different-sized bags.

Small (> 0.5L)

  • Credit cards/cash
  • Keys
  • Insurance/registration
  • Chapstick or other small accessories

Medium (0.5 – 0.9L)

  • Wallet
  • Cell phone
  • Keys
  • Insurance/registration
  • Small tool kit

Large (1.0L – 1.5L)

  • All of the above plus:
    • Glasses
    • Small notebook/map
    • Other small accessories
    • Small water bottle

Outer Shell Material

Like many other motorcycle bags, leg bags are constructed from nylon or polyester. These materials tend to hold up better against the elements compared to other materials like canvas.

Some leg bags are constructed from leather; however, they tend to be larger and bulkier than bags made specifically for motorcycle riders.

When shopping for a motorcycle leg bag, riders can look for polyester with a denier rating, measuring the strength and thickness of the material’s threads.

The higher the rating, the stronger and more durable the bag should be.

Although many of the leg bags on the market aren’t made to the same quality as other bags, like tank bags, so you might be hard-pressed to find a lot of options with denier ratings in the 1600-1800D range.

Try finding one with a 400-600D rating, and you should be pretty happy with the quality.

Water Protection

Many leg bags on the market are at minimum water-resistant, feature water-resistant zippers, or come equipped with a water-resistant cover.

If the leg bag you select doesn’t offer those options, it’s best to keep the bags out of persistent rain or downpours. Leg bags can be worn under rain gear due to their compact size and low profile; however, their convenience will be affected.

Adjustable Straps

Most motorcycle leg bags will come with two adjustable straps: one for the waist and one for the leg. If possible, riders should check with a bag manufacturer on the length of the waist belt to ensure it will fit.

While some bag companies offer extensions, this is not always the case. Checking the leg strap length is a good idea as well, especially if you have larger thighs.

Some waist straps can be used to carry leg bags while off-bike as well. This comes in handy when you’re planning to park your bike somewhere and walk around for a while. Having a strap that can turn your bag into a shoulder or cross-body bag can be very convenient.

Final Thoughts

Motorcycle leg bags are the riding companion you never knew you needed. They help riders of any style of motorcycle carry those riding essentials in an easy-to-access manner, so they don’t have to try and fish through pockets or other bags. Not to mention, they come at a low price, making them an ideal option when it comes to motorcycle storage.
